“Capes” was inspired by one of Cavazos’ first signs of schizophrenia at a young age. The song’s hip hop beats and cello harmonies carry the listener to a story of a young boy who believes he can save the world with his “box full of capes and sticker star sheets.” By the end of the first verse, it becomes clear the boy has fallen from reality. The boy calls for help, but is left without the support he needs. It ends with a plea to “tell him he is seen.” The song captures the sometimes painful isolation of mental illness and the power of destigmatizing the conversation.
